What Does BPSS Involve

Screening for BPSS clearance consists of four main elements:

  1. Identity Verification: This involves verifying an individual’s identity using official documents, such as passports or national identity cards. The purpose is to ensure that the person being screened is who they claim to be.
  2. Employment Verification: Employment checking, or employment history verification, involves confirming an individual’s employment history, including their previous employers, job roles, and dates of employment. It aims to establish a reliable record of an individual’s work experience and identify any gaps or inconsistencies.
  3. Criminal Record Check: A criminal record check is conducted to determine if an individual has any criminal convictions or cautions. The specific level of criminal record check required may vary depending on the nature of the position or contract.
  4. Right to Work Check: The right to work check is a nationality and immigration status check. This step involves verifying an individual’s right to work in the UK. It ensures that the individual is a UK citizen, a European Economic Area (EEA) national, or has the necessary immigration status to work in the country.

However, it’s generally recommended that checks be conducted periodically, typically every three to five years or as determined by the employing organisation’s continuous background screening policies.
